Book 2 Chapters 3-6
"She had had her first love affair when she was sixteen, with a Party member of sixty who later committed suicide to avoid arrest. 'And a good job too,' said Julia. 'Otherwise they'd have had my name out of him when he confessed.' Since then there had been various others. Life as she saw it was quite simple. You wanted a good time; 'they' meaning the Party, wanted to stop you having it; you broke the rules as best you could. She seemed to think it just as natural that 'they' should want to rob you of your pleasures as that you should want to avoid being caught." -pg.109
To me this is important because it talks about the woman that Winston may be falling in love with and on top of that not just any woman, but the one that he is breaking the rules with. This section talks about her and some of her background and kind of her backstory to everything. For example, when I read that her first affair when she was just sixteen and the guy she had it with was sixty, it completely took me by surprise. It not only shows her rebelliousness towards the party at such a young age, but also shows how strict the society is. This man's conscious was so heavy on him that just a simple act of having an affair lead him to make such a drastic decision and take his life away. It also gives us, the readers, an insight of how Julia's thought process. Later in this paragraph it emphasizes on how she hates the Party and the fact that they want to take life's pleasures away from her. That the Party wants to "rob" her from her pleasures. It also says how she doesn't believe in Big Brother as she has never seen. This piece of text has a tone that implies that everything Julia does is a symbol of rebellion towards the Party. I know this by the word choice the author uses like in the phrase "you broke the rules as best you could." With the goal of just defying the Party itself and an act of having an affair was a blow to the Party.
You did a good job breaking down every detail and explaining it. I was shocked when I read she had an affair with a sixty year old. This quote really shows how rebellious she is and how she wants too live life and nothing is stopping her. Great job my friend.
ReplyDeleteI found it interesting that you mention your opinion and why you chose this quote. I enjoyed that you explained the background of this quote and explained it. I'm glad you mentioned the character's past actions and how it shows what kind of person she is. I'm grateful that you made connections in the text and you mentioned the tone of the text. I agree with your tone. You describing the word choice, only makes your response even better.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed how you really went into depth analyzing your quote. It made me think of certain things in a new way. For example, I thought Orwell mentioned the fact the Julia had sex with a sixty year old when she was sixteen to really make it seem like she's been around ever since a young age, to make the reader have a negative view on her. But you made me think of it differently, now I feel like she just did this stuff to defy the Party without doing anything too outrageous, in a sense to feel liberated and like she's not under their control for a while. I still find it kind of weird that she had sex with a sixty year old at such a young age, but hey who am I to judge, it's her life not mine.
ReplyDeleteYour blog was really analytical. It went dove deep into the plot of the story. Your views towards Julia and her rebellious nature are expressed greatly within your text. It was weird to read how a teenager would get it on with a sixty-year-old man, but it did show that Julia had rebellious tendencies at a very young age. The older gentlemen did commit suicide, probably because he knew he was going to be vaporized after committing a crime like that.
ReplyDeleteGreat quote Luis I found it very interesting! Its crazy how she had an affair with a Sixty-year old and then he committed suicide so he doesn't get in trouble. This showed how how she didn't care about anything and wanted to do things her way.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, good job Luisito. Secondly, do you think Winston had an extra sense of love because of who Julia was? The rebel character she was? OR was it actually true love? Isn't is a little cliche? Besides that, good job with analyzing your quote and the affairs.
